The fishmeal terminal in Bremen is the largest and most modern transhipment facility for fishmeal in Europe. Due to the total quayage of 230 metres and a maximum draught of 9.00 metres large sea-going vessels can be unloaded directly by means of modern unloading equipment (Siwertell). This equipment is of environmentally friendly design because it enables unloading operations to be carried out with very little dust generation.
As a port of entry into the EU, Bremen is subject to strict controls by the authorities. Unloading and examination for salmonellae is supervised and carried out by the veterinary authorities. Samples are taken by an automatic sampler with a high sampling-frequency to ensure that the best possible cross-section of the product structure is obtained.
This terminal is the only one in Europe with a thermal sterilizing plant. For decades this has proven to be the most careful and effective method of destroying salmonella. The highly odorous waste air arising from heating and subsequently cooling the fishmeal is cleaned in a very modern deodorizing plant.
Storing the fishmeal in up to 100 silos, with individual capacities between 70 and 750 tons allows unique quality optimization with total storage capacity of 45,000 tons of fishmeal. The quality requirements of the customers are met at the waterside warehouse (loading of coasters and river barges), at warehouse I and silo 3, and at warehouse III (road trucks and railway cars). At warehouse III fishmeal is filled in bags on pallets, as well as loaded in bulk or bags (also big bags) onto trucks or railway cars, so that continuous availability and customized service is possible for the customers.
